Homecoming

Returning home after a summer holiday brings mixed feelings. The cottage we were staying in near the Suffolk coast was absolutely beautiful. It even had its own gargoyle.

Whilst we were there there was sandcastling, fish and chip eating and even (gasp) real-life beach hut visiting. During the 24 hours before we reached home we all had that familiar flat feeling of a good time coming to an end.

Despite this, the sight of our (slightly wild and woolly) strip of front garden and the familiar pink walls of our little house was reassuring. As we stepped through the door the little ones rushed off to find toys that they'd left behind and I got my usual post-holiday urge to clean and rearrange.

It was rather more measured this year though and I realised it was truly lovely to be back amongst cherished objects.

Within hours the girls and I had filled three our favourite jars and jugs with flowers from the garden and reacquainted ourselves with Mrs Thriftyhousehold's much-loved quilts

The arrival of a wonderful vintage hand-knitted cardigan from etsy in the last few days has added to the  cosy joy of being back home.

Edited to add: A space has become available on my beginners' silver clay workshop this coming Saturday 1st September. It's very short notice but drop me a line on emma at minniedog dot co dot uk if you'd like to come along.

The sweater looks lovely. Etsy is one of my favourite sites too. You can find the most beautiful things there!

  6. I regularly read your blog but have not commented before. I do enjoy your blog and your jewellery is beautiful. I've just spotted your cushion - it looks lovely. I've just started this 'painted ladies' tapestry so now I know how good it will look when I finish (hopefully).

  11. Thats what holidays are for..yes there is a little flatness at the thought of getting back to normal, but as it hasn't been normal for a week or two it becomes exciting. Don't you think?

  12. It is interesting to read of your range of coming home emotions..I could identify with each one..but like you, lately I have settled into being home a lot faster than I used to..I wonder whether I've finally grown up..it's taken a while!

  14. We felt the same when we came home from holiday. Especially leaving lovely weather at Brighton to wet and windy in Cornwall.

The weather has been lovely where you are especially at the beginning of August. I visited my Mum (near by you) and cut her grass in temps of the high 20's. Sweated off a few ounzes that afternoon!

  17. It's lovely to have you back, Emma. As my two and a half year old daugther said as we stepped across our threshold on returning from holiday last week: 'I was sad to leave but I'm happy to be back'!

  22. I always think one of the nicest things about going away is the coming home again. The opening of your own front door and that first breath of the scent of home is a happy feeling. Glad you had a lovely time away, welcome back and by the way thanks so much for the 'Four Hedges' book recommendation a while back. My copy arrived today and I've managed to read around 10 pages between sorting out Toby - I can't wait until his bedtime when I plan to snuggle up and get stuck in properly!

  26. Our homecoming wasn't quite as aesthetically pleasing as yours but it was still good to be home - especially as we had made special effort to tidy before we left so we came home to an unusually appealing home! ;o) xxx
